Lenovo X1 Yoga Gen 6 Sucks

09/17/2023

Many many years ago I had an Acer laptop that ran so hot that it turned itself off constantly during summer. I haven't used another Acer laptop since. Recently I used a university-assigned Lenovo X1 Yoga Gen 6, and the thing had the worst thermal I've seen since that poor Acer. Often times the fan just started to run as soon as I opened the lid of the laptop, and the fan would keep running even after I closed the lid, which is something I haven't seen in any other laptop. At first I thought it's because of some particularly aggressive fan curve settings, but then I realized that the laptop did run very hot (especially at the area above the upper left corner of the keyboard) even on the most common tasks, so it's probably really necessary to run the fans.

On top of the bad thermal, the 1185G7 processor was also quite disappointing. When I recorded lecture videos with Camtasia (with browser, PowerPoint, Eclipse, and maybe some other dev tools running), I could feel lags that I never felt on my Xiaoxin 14 Pro 2021. Speaking of the Xiaoxin, although it is a consumer-grade, mid-level laptop with a somewhat flimsy body, the user experience is much better than its expensive business-grade cousin. It's cool and quiet, and 5800H (8 cores 16 threads) handles my multi-tasking workload a lot better 1185G7 (4 cores 8 threads).
